Philemon Kiplimo Kimaiyo

Kenyan long-distance runner Philemon Kiplimo Kimaiyo has been handed a two-year ban by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) after admitting anti-doping rule violations involving the prohibited substance chlortalidone.

According to the AIU decision, the 27-year-old athlete will be ineligible to compete from September 1, 2026, to August 31, 2028. His results from July 19, 2026, the date of the sample collection, have also been disqualified.

The AIU said Kimaiyo provided an out-of-competition urine sample in Mwaita, Kenya, on July 19, 2026.

The sample was later found to contain chlortalidone, a diuretic and masking agent listed under the World Anti-Doping Agency’s 2026 Prohibited List.

Chlortalidone is classified as a specified substance and is prohibited both in and out of competition. The AIU said Kimaiyo did not have a Therapeutic Use Exemption allowing him to use the substance and found no issue with the testing or laboratory procedures that could have explained the result.

Kimaiyo’s explanation

During an interview with the AIU on August 25, 2026, Kimaiyo said he did not know what chlortalidone was.

According to the AIU’s account of his explanation, he said that about a week before the test, he had taken painkillers belonging to his wife to deal with pain after long runs.

He said he could not remember the name or appearance of the medication. He also told the anti-doping body that he had taken vitamins and dietary supplements but could not identify them.

The AIU later received photographs of the medication packaging. Reports on the decision said the medicine was Olmecure-CT 40, which contains olmesartan medoxomil and chlortalidone.

The AIU said there was no evidence that Kimaiyo’s violation was intentional. As this was his first anti-doping rule violation and the substance was classified as a specified substance, he received a two-year sanction rather than the longer sanction that may apply where intentional use is established.

Kimaiyo accepted the anti-doping rule violations and the consequences, bringing the case to a resolution without a disciplinary hearing.

Career record

Before the suspension, Kimaiyo had established himself as a competitive road runner, with personal bests of 58:11 in the half marathon and 2:04:01 in the marathon, according to World Athletics.

He won the 2019 B.A.A. Half Marathon in Boston in 1:01:58, becoming the men’s champion of the race.

The Boston Athletic Association confirms the result. He later won the 2021 Bahrain Royal Night Half Marathon in 1:00:01 and finished second at the 2022 Prague Half Marathon in 59:33.

His other notable results include a third-place finish at the 2022 B.A.A. 10K and eighth place at the 2023 Berlin Marathon in 2:04:56.

His marathon personal best came at the 2025 Hamburg Marathon, where he finished second in 2:04:01, behind fellow Kenyan Amos Kipruto, who won in 2:03:46.

World Athletics records the result.Kimaiyo also finished eighth at the 2025 Chicago Marathon in 2:06:14, according to his recorded competition history.

Results disqualifiedAs part of the sanction, Kimaiyo’s results from July 19, 2026 onwards have been disqualified. This means any titles, medals, points, prize money, awards or appearance fees earned during the affected period are subject to forfeiture under the AIU decision.

Kimaiyo will therefore remain ineligible to compete until August 31, 2028, subject to the applicable appeal process. The AIU decision is appealable under the relevant anti-doping rules.
