𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐌𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐭𝐢 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐨𝐬

Activist Boniface Mulinge Muteti has been found alive after going missing for four days following protests in Nairobi over the continued detention of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye.

Human rights activist and Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid said Muteti was found in the Lukenya area of Machakos County at around 3am on Friday, September 25, 2026.

Khalid said Muteti was reportedly left in the area before walking for a long distance to a Shell petrol station, where he sought help from a member of the public to contact his family.

“Comrade Muteti Mulinge has been found. He was dumped last night around 3:00 am in the Lukenya area. He had to walk a long distance to a Shell petrol station where he got a good Samaritan who helped him with a phone to call his brother,” Khalid said.

According to Khalid, Muteti was weak, disoriented and injured when he was found. He was subsequently taken to a hospital in the Mlolongo area for treatment.

“He is disoriented, weak and injured. He is currently receiving treatment at Sanel Hospital in Mlolongo area. Family, friends and comrades are proceeding there,” Khalid added.

Citizen Digital separately reported that Muteti’s brother confirmed he had been taken to hospital in Mlolongo.

The outlet also confirmed Khalid’s account that Muteti was found in Lukenya before making his way to a petrol station to seek help.

Muteti went missing after Nairobi protestsMuteti’s disappearance was reported on Monday, September 21, after he took part in demonstrations in Nairobi’s Central Business District calling for the release of Besigye.

Reports indicate that Muteti had separated from other activists to visit a cybercafé and print a petition that was to be presented to police and other government offices.He later reportedly sent a message indicating that he had been arrested.

His phone subsequently became unreachable, leaving his family and fellow activists unable to establish his whereabouts.His disappearance prompted his family and human rights organisations, including the Kenya Human Rights Commission and Vocal Africa, to seek information about his whereabouts.

The family and activists also reported the matter to police as efforts to trace him continued.

Court intervenes

The matter was taken to the Milimani Law Courts on Thursday, September 24, where activist Francis Awino filed an urgent application seeking orders compelling Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja and DCI Director Mohammed Amin to account for Muteti’s whereabouts.

The application sought information on whether Muteti had been arrested or detained and, if so, where he was being held and under what authority.

It also sought records relating to any arrest, detention, transfer or release.However, police had not publicly confirmed that Muteti was in their custody.

The circumstances surrounding his disappearance and how he ended up in Lukenya had also not been established by the time he was found.

Muteti is now receiving medical attention in Mlolongo as his family, friends and fellow activists seek further information about what happened to him during the four days he was missing.
