The Kenya Navy on Sunday rescued 41 people after a cargo dhow developed a leak and began taking on water while sailing from Shimoni in Kwale County to Pemba, according to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

KDF said the dhow, SIRI YA MAFANIKIO, encountered trouble about 1.5 nautical miles (approximately three kilometres) off Mpunguti ya Juu Island, triggering a search and rescue operation.The vessel was carrying 41 people, comprising 11 crew members and 30 passengers from Kenya and Tanzania.
โThe operation was initiated after Shimoni SBU received a distress alert through the Shimoni Beach Management Unit (BMU) from the captain of the cargo dhow SIRI YA MAFANIKIO, which had begun taking on water approximately 1.5 nautical miles off Mpunguti ya Juu Island. The vessel was en route from Shimoni to Pemba.โ
According to KDF, the dhow’s captain raised the alarm through the Shimoni Beach Management Unit (BMU), which relayed the distress call to the Kenya Navy’s Shimoni Special Boats Unit (SBU).
A patrol boat was immediately dispatched to the scene.
“Kenya Navy personnel from the Shimoni Special Boats Unit (SBU) successfully rescued 41 people during a search and rescue operation,” KDF said in a statement.
The military said all passengers and crew were safely evacuated before the situation worsened, averting any loss of life.

Fortunately enough, every single person on board was safely evacuated before the sinking vessel could claim any lives.Following the rescue, the damaged dhow was towed back to Shimoni Port.
According to the KDF, one person sustained minor injuries during the incident and was taken to Qatar Medical Centre in Shimoni for treatment.
