The Embassy of South Sudan in Nairobi has been closed following reported rent arrears, disrupting consular services for South Sudanese citizens living in Kenya.

The diplomatic mission, located in Nairobi’s Kilimani area, was reportedly closed on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, according to Radio Tamazuj, which cited an embassy staff member familiar with the situation.

The staff member said the embassy would remain closed until the South Sudanese government intervenes and settles the outstanding rent.

The latest closure has left South Sudanese seeking essential services without access to the mission. The affected services include assistance with travel documents and other consular matters normally handled by the embassy.

The reported closure comes less than a year after the South Sudanese Embassy in Nairobi faced a similar disruption over financial difficulties.In November 2025, reports emerged that the embassy’s premises in Kilimani had been locked over rent arrears.

The embassy later announced that it would resume operations, describing the interruption as resulting from internal administrative arrangements.The recurring disruption has raised concerns about the ability of South Sudan’s government to maintain its diplomatic missions and provide services to its citizens abroad.

Financial pressure on foreign missionsSouth Sudan has faced persistent financial difficulties, with delays in funding affecting its diplomatic missions and staff.

The country’s economy remains heavily dependent on oil revenues, leaving government finances vulnerable to disruptions in oil production and other economic pressures.

Reports have previously linked financial difficulties to unpaid salaries and operating costs at South Sudanese diplomatic missions.In 2025, Kenyan employees working at the South Sudanese Embassy in Nairobi also sued the mission over alleged unpaid wages.

The workers claimed they were owed more than $300,000 in back pay. The embassy acknowledged delays in salaries and said it was working to resolve the matter.

The closure also comes as South Sudan prepares for a change in leadership at its Nairobi diplomatic mission.

Newly appointed Ambassador Simon Juach Deng reportedly bid farewell to President Salva Kiir in Juba on August 6 and is expected to assume his Nairobi posting in September.

The leadership transition is taking place against the backdrop of financial challenges facing South Sudan’s diplomatic network.

For South Sudanese citizens in Kenya, the immediate concern remains access to consular services as they await the government’s intervention and the reopening of the Nairobi mission.
