Kenyan mental health advocate Celine Kamotho has died just days before she was scheduled to travel to the United States to reunite with her husband.
Kamotho’s death was announced in a statement shared on August 27, 2026, by her aunt, Dr Eunice Wamuyu Menja, who said Kamotho had been expected to fly to the US that day.
According to Menja, what was supposed to be an important day in Kamotho’s life instead became a day of mourning for her family and friends.
Kamotho was remembered as a mental health advocate whose work had an impact on people around her.
Kamotho’s planned journey to the United States was meant to reunite her with her husband and begin what her family described as a new chapter in their lives.
Menja said the sudden change from preparing for a journey to mourning Kamotho was a painful reminder of how quickly circumstances can change.
โToday you were to be on your plane to the US to join your husband. Instead, today has become your memorial day. We lost another Mental Health Advocate. Life can change in a moment. The plans we make, the journeys we anticipate, the tomorrows we assume are guaranteed- sometimes they disappear without warning,โ Menja said in her tribute.
The Kenyan diaspora also joined Kamotho’s family and friends in mourning her death, remembering her for her work in mental health advocacy.
