The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has linked the September 2025 murder of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu to the killing of clinical psychologist Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso in July 2026.

The development comes nearly a year after Mbobu was shot dead while driving home from work along Magadi Road in Nairobi on September 9, 2025.

On Thursday, September 24, 2026, detectives arrested Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot, whom they suspect was the gunman in the killing.

According to the DCI, detectives recovered a Ceska pistol that had been issued to Cheruiyot at the time of the incident.

Ballistic examination later established that the firearm was used in the shooting that killed Mbobu.

โ€œAs part of the ongoing investigations, detectives today recovered the Ceska pistol that had been issued to the suspect at the time of the incident. Ballistic examination has since confirmed that the firearm was indeed used in the shooting that claimed the life of Lawyer Mbobu,โ€ DCI Director Mohamed Amin said.

The agency said the finding provides a major forensic breakthrough as investigators continue piecing together how the lawyer was killed.

Detectives have also arrested two boda boda riders in connection with the case. Nicholas Lemiso Naula is suspected of transporting Cheruiyot to and from the scene, while Noah Kipkirui Langat is suspected of conducting surveillance on Mbobu before the shooting.

The three suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue. The DCI has further identified Police Inspector Kenneth Sang as another suspect.

Sang is currently at large and is alleged to have coordinated the operation in collaboration with Rose Mbithe.Mbithe is already in custody in connection with the murder of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, who was shot dead on the morning of July 29, 2026, in Nairobi.

Court records and previous reports indicate that Mbithe and her two children are facing allegations relating to Mutisoโ€™s murder, although the case remains before the courts.

Mbobu was a lawyer and former chairman of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal. He was shot while driving home along Magadi Road, with police at the time reporting that the attackers were travelling on a motorcycle.

The motive behind Mbobuโ€™s killing has not been conclusively established. In the early stages of the investigation, several people were questioned, including KANU Secretary General George Wainaina, who was later released after questioning.

Reports at the time indicated that investigators had not found evidence linking those questioned to the murder.

The DCI says investigations remain active as detectives pursue other people suspected to have been involved and work to establish the circumstances, planning and motive behind the killing.
