𝐌𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐬 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐞 𝐊𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐃𝐫. 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐍𝐭𝐡𝐮𝐧𝐲𝐚 𝐌𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐨

Two suspects, a mother and her son, have appeared before the Milimani Law Courts as detectives continue investigating the murder of clinical psychologist and researcher Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.

Rose Mbithe Mulwa and her son, Chris Mulwa, were arraigned on Friday after they were arrested in what investigators described as an intelligence-led operation.

The prosecution asked the court to detain the two for 30 days to allow detectives to complete investigations into the killing.Investigators are also exploring whether Dr. Mutiso’s murder is linked to the fatal shooting of lawyer Matthew Kyalo Mbobu in September 2025.

According to the sworn by Corporal Romana Oduor, Dr. Mutiso had reported two separate incidents in which she was allegedly followed and threatened by men riding a motorcycle before she was eventually shot dead.

One of the incidents occurred on July 7, 2026, at about 6:30 p.m. while she was driving home along Ngong Road near Junction Mall.In her statement to police, Dr. Mutiso said:

“On the 7th day of July at around 18:30 hours, I was driving from Upper Hill towards home behind Junction Mall. While at Dagoretti Corner junction, I stopped at the traffic lights. Immediately one rider came to the window and showed me a pistol. I drove off through the traffic lights to the opposite direction to Kilimani Police Station to make a report,” according to the affidavit.

The prosecution told the court that after reporting the incident, Dr. Mutiso informed investigators and her husband that she had recognized the passenger on the motorcycle as Chris Mulwa.

The court documents further state that Rose Mbithe Mulwa is the former wife of Prof. David Musyimi Ndetei, who is Dr. Mutiso’s husband. The two divorced in 2001 after having four children together, including Chris Mulwa.

According to investigators, Mbobu represented Prof. Ndetei in a property dispute involving his former wife, Rose Mbithe Mulwa. The case, filed in 2002, concerned the ownership and division of matrimonial property, including land and other assets reportedly worth billions of shillings.Police say both killings share similarities.

Investigators believe lawyer Mbobu was trailed before he was shot dead along Magadi Road on September 9, 2025. Nearly 11 months later, Dr. Mutiso was also allegedly followed by assailants on a motorcycle before she was shot while travelling in a taxi in Nairobi’s Upper Hill on her way to work.Her killing came 24 days after she reported receiving threats to her life at Kilimani Police Station.

Meanwhile, a postmortem examination conducted at the Kenyatta National Hospital mortuary established that Dr. Mutiso died from multiple gunshot wounds.Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor said the examination found that she had been shot three times.

“We found that she was shot three times: twice on the head. The two gunshots entered on the left side and exited on the right side. There was also another entry wound on the back,” Dr. Oduor said.

He added: “What led to her death was severe bleeding and chest injury and also head injury because of the three bullet wounds.”

Dr. Oduor said the injuries were extremely severe, leaving virtually no chance of survival.The postmortem examination lasted nearly four hours on Friday and was conducted in the presence of Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers led by Head of Homicide Martin Nyoguto, as well as members of Dr. Mutiso’s family.

The court is expected to determine the prosecution’s request to detain the two suspects as investigations continue.
